Our June Wine of the Month is the 2020 Ventale Valpolicella Superiore 2020.

The region of Veneto in the Northeast of Italy, is known for two styles of red wines blended from three main grape varieties: Corvina, Rondinella, and Corvinone. Amarone della Valpolicella is the powerful and intense style while Valpolicella is the easy drinking style. The Ventale Valpolicella Superiore is the latter style.

Grape bunches were hand-picked in the middle of October. Fermentation happens over the course of about 3 weeks in truncated cone-shaped oak barrels. It is then aged for 18 months in 500-liter casks, 70% of which are oak, 20% chestnut, and 10% cherry wood. After bottling, they are further aged for some months before being sold. The final blend of this vintage is 80% Corvina, 10% Corvinone, and 10% Rondinella.

Tasting notes from the importer:
“Ruby red in color with purple tinges. It has a fragrant and intense aroma with hints of ripe cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry and green pepper, followed by hints of cocoa and dried fruit. On the palate, its vibrant juiciness is accompanied by velvety tannins. It has a lingering and tangy aftertaste.”
Food pairing options: red meats, game, and mature cheeses.

Regularly $20.99, for the month of June it will be $14.99.

We hope you enjoy our Wine of the Month.
